A day in Dresda

Hello everyone!

I recently wrote about my plans for new years eve in Berlin, and well finally the official planning is set! Anyway I added a little stop on the way home, and the result is a day in Dresden ( a city totally unknown to me, a part from the fact that I heard of it a lot from school history books especially on chapters about World War II , and the Unesco site about the Elbe valley).

But well that’s what makes it exciting, right? Discovering new places is always a pleasant surprise!:)

Anyone of you who has been there yet? If so, please advise and suggestions are always welcome!!

I read somewhere that it is called “the Florence on the Elbe river”. Seems pretty charming! And also it is almost divided in two blocks the Altstadt (the Old city) and the Neustadt (New City). Although Dresden is often said to be a Baroque city its architecture is influenced by more than one style. It is possible to find  Renaissance and Historism, as well as the contemporary styles of Modernism and Postmodernism.

But of course I have limited time so I must make some choices… below is what I absolutely want to see!!! As I lovely like to call it “Visit or die list”… ahuahu..

Visit:

Semperoper: Dresden’s famous opera  Neo-Renaissance house, where the world-famous composer Richard Wagner held some of his premiers… it looks so charming!

Zwinger: did someone say Baroque building…yes I think this gives back a pretty good idea of it!

Frauenkirche:  The domed Frauenkirche – one of Dresden’s most beloved symbols – has literally risen from the city’s ashes. The original graced its skyline for two centuries before collapsing two days after the devastating February 1945 bombing.

Residenzschloss: Dresden’s fortress-like Renaissance city palace was home to the Saxon rulers from 1485 to 1918. I don’t think I ‘ll have the time to get in but at least I’ll try to get there for a brief visit!
